Abstract

Predictability of organizational based self esteem, tenure and rank on organizational commitment of Nigeria Prison Service employees in Owerri, Imo State was investigated in this study. The participants comprised of 105 employees, 51 of whom were males. They were drawn from various departments of Nigeria Prison Service, Owerri. Their ages ranged from 28-58 years (M = 37.43; SD = 8.82). The participants responded to organizational commitment and organizational based self esteem scales administered through convenience sampling technique. Cross-sectional survey design was adopted while multiple regression analysis was used to analyze data collected. Results showed that organizational based self esteem and rank had direct significant relationships with organizational commitment while tenure did not have a significant relationship with organizational commitment. The study recommends that the Nigeria Prison Service should evolve strategies that can enhance the organizational based selfesteem of its workforce, especially among short tenured employees, so as to ensure increased commitment.
