Depression in workplace among low cadre civil servants in Awka Nigeria: A Factorial Study of Gender and Self-Esteem.

Abstract

The study investigated Depression in Workplace among Low Cadre Civil Servants in Awka Nigeria: A Factorial Study of Gender and Self-esteem. A total of 200 participants which comprised of 66 males and 134 females were drawn from a population of low cadre civil servants from Anambra State Secretariat, Awka, Nigeria. Their ages ranged from 18 to 59 years with mean age of 38.5 and standard deviation of 12.3. The instruments used in this study were Depression Status Inventory (DSI) and Hudson Self Esteem Scale (HSES). Two- way analysis of variance was used to analyze the data obtained. The result shows that there is no significant difference between male and female low cadre civil servants in exhibiting workplace depression in their places of work. The result also shows that there is no significant difference between low cadre civil servants with high self-esteem and those with low self-esteem in exhibiting depression at their places of work. Finally there was significant interaction effect of gender and self-esteem on work place depression among low cadre civil servants in Awka. Recommendations were made among others that the state Government through the civil service commission should endeavour to review the salaries, wages and fringe benefits of low cadre civil servants to an acceptable level in order to reduce the severity of depression they are passing through in their places of work as a result of por rumeneration.
